Above Average Guy is out now!

Japanese game shows are what it’s all about!

So Above Average Guy finally saw it’s release on Friday with the fine chap over at Armor Games. Absolutely love those guys but I think I may love this game a little more (Sorry!)

If you’ve been following me you know I actually started this game last year but with tonnes of other stuff getting in the way I actually had to shelve it which sucks, shelving any project really sucks. So it was awesome to get it finished up and show it off to you guys! It was an insanely fun game to make and design as Japanese culture has always amazed me a bit, same with game shows over there and how things seem to be a little crazy so making a game around that concept just fell hand in hand with stupidity to be honest! And it’s always a pleasure to work with NCH as per usual, same with Waterflame who made an absolutely bitchin’ soundtrack. Seriously, it’s something I’ve listened to waaaaay to much myself trust me! Going to also try and get that soundtrack a public release so you guys can download it :)

I can get around a 7 minute run usually with 1 death and SSS score. What can do you?

Space is Key @ PAX Prime!

You read it correctly, super exciting news!

So Space is Key is going to be at PAX Prime with the very fine folk at Playvue. You can check it out here http://pax.playvue.com/

This is super cool news that it’ll be there for you to play, I’ve changed the build a little and you can post your scores to twitter fine now so if you’re going,  post your score and I’ll see it and tweet you back :)

It’s a huge shame I can’t fly out though as I’d loved to have been there and man the booth (It’s always amazing speaking with everyone and getting involved with you guys) but I’ve not been in the best of health and after an operation lately I’m sadly unable to head out! In other news though! I’ve finished ‘Above Average Guy’ and also another cheeky little project that I’m going to announce pretty soon as it’s got a sponsor now. But it’s really cool and I know you’ll love it.

Really excited that ‘Above Average Guy’ finally got completed as I actually benched this project months and months ago, probably late last year. And I feel super bad for benching it, but it was for cool stuff too, I promise. Regardless, it’s finished now so hopefully you guys can be playing it next month!

Over the weekend I also made a quick project with Skybase for Ludum Dare however with a tonne of other work on, it didn’t get finished, but it’s so close! SO, the plan is to polish and spice it up a little, then hopefully get it a release. At heart, this is a avoid and collect style game, coupled with some beautiful abstract art. The concept is you’re a square growing in to a rainbow, it makes sense…

I think I’ll start doing these every few months as these are a good way to sum up everything I’m doing to be honest! I generally only blog when I’ve made good progress with a project and I’ve always got other things on the go so here it is!

Above Average Guy

So this project as you’ll probably know is coming along brilliant! Currently it’s pretty much done, all levels have been designed, there are like 40 levels which are essentially micro-puzzles with a badass boss who is a nightmare unless you work out his pattern. So talking about bosses, I’ve seen a lot of bosses over the year that are random and it seems to be a little about skill but mostly luck. I’ve just done things how they used to be, how I grew up with, which is all pattern. If you figure out the bosses pattern, you’ll be able to kill him pretty fast. I think this is how most bosses should be done, it’s fun figuring out what he does and how he reacts I personally think!

The boss has been pretty glued in to how I wanted it, but his environment wasn’t. This is the final environment for the boss!

Above Average Guy is in it’s final steps as I said then, really hoping to tie this up within a week, as it’s mostly just bug fixes. Everything runs great! A little polish on gameplay and it’ll be all good. I’ll probably end up releasing a trailer for it like I usually do, and MAYBE pretty soon I’ll post up the intro animation to the game which I absolutely love. Alex (NCH) done an amazing job with this and it sets the scene to the game so well!

 

Space is Key Android + Space is Key iOS/Android 1.1 update

If you follow Space is Key mobile version you’ll know that I’ve been porting it all over AIR so It can be used on both Android/iOS. This is great news, cause’ I’ve really been wanting to get an Android version out this year but never got around to it, so with AIR I’m just killing a load of birds with a massive shotgun. S0 at the moment this is also pretty much done! It’s been fully tested on a few Android devices (Galaxy S2,S3, Nexus 7, HTC EVO 3D) and a few I can’t remember their names. To point out! The builds are universal, so it’ll work on any size screen (Tablets or phones), which I think is pretty cool!

It’s the iOS build that’s taking a little bit longer than I thought, doing a bit of optimisation with it and after a long mess on with iTunes connect and the whole certificate process with Adobe AIR, I think it’s finally cleared up! So this really shouldn’t be long either.

New project!

So currently this project isn’t named. Even though I usually try and tie up a name really quick, nothing is set in stone yet. So this is another game I’m teaming up with Alex on and it’s going to be a side-scrolling, survival/defense kind of game. Have that short genres! In essesence you’re a dude based in a forest and the unknown is attacking you, it’s a wave based game and you’re blowing the crap out of things to stay alive!

It’s still pretty early on, I’ve done a lot of the games logic and engine and Alex is mainly plodding on with making it all look pretty. BUT, here’s an exclusive little peak! :)

It’s always good to be working on a few things at once I feel, really gives fresh perspectives to how you’re doing things and not just lost in a single game. So that’s it really! I’ll update you guys more when I have more to say :)

I’m more than above average!

I feel like I have loads more to share with you guys with regards to Above Average Guy! So I’ve been away to Berlin for the last weekend to recharge a bit, and it was freaking awesome! Now I’m back and since I’ve been back; Above Average Guy has just been completely pumped with work so much, so we’re actually like so so close.

I’ve got to make sure all the levels play fluidly and like, that’s it! Hopefully we don’t have a mega time dealing with sponsors like there was with Platcore.

The loader for the game. Super manga style, y’know how the Japanese would want it? It’s just looking so nice because of NCH!

NCH done an amazing job with this intro scene, I’m actually in love with it. I may share it with you guys before the game gets released; that’s how much I like it! And Waterflame blessed it with some magical beats.

So you’re sitting there – watching some TV. Then suddenly! ‘HEY YOU! SITTING ON THE COUCH GUY’. I think that’s you?

Do you think I should record a trailer? I may do, but not too sure! Anyway, can’t wait to let you guys play it! Hopefully it’ll be soon! :)

A bit of everything

Lots and lots have things have been happening over the last month! I thought it’d just be better to do a super big post and run through lots of stuff!

Eleventh Hour

So Eleventh Hour actually hit front page on Kongregate and on Newgrounds which is great! It’s always good to see the game up their – thanks to Tom and Greg! :)

It’s actually got a much better reaction from the Kong and NG crowd than it did from the Armorgames players. Which I find pretty interesting – A lot of the Kong feedback was pushing me to make something of this idea and pursue it more (Which me and Jay have ideas for, it’s just finding the time we’re both able too). I’m hoping in a month or two we’ll be able to sit down and nail something and not just a quick game! :)

I’m totally thinking a zelda meets fallout style. I mean, this prequel will set us up perfectly ;) Lots of RPG elements; Crafting, EXP, Skill tree, nice inventory and quests. Time will tell for it!

Platcore

Wow – bet you haven’t heard this name for a while, right?! Bloody hell.

So yeah! After months and months of talking to a few sponsors and getting things sorted out – it’s all finally a done deal and ready to release (I’ve just got to add a little tutorial then boosh!) I’ll let you guys know when it launches though, as I do! I’m hoping it’s this week – if not, definitely next week!

Above Average Guy

It’s a shame this got put on hold for Eleventh Hour and then after that Platcore got sorted out! So this game has been on the backburner for a little while now sadly. BUT, I plan to pickup everything in a week or so and it’s pretty much done to be honest. All I’m doing is designing a few more levels to keep a decent amount of content in it, then we’ll be good for that!

I’ve got everything crossed that the process for sponsorship won’t take as long as Platcore! (Nothing in the world can to be honest!) :)

We’re waiting for the show to begin! HURRY CHRIS!

Mochi London 2012

Now this has turned in to a biggie! We’re looking at 101 registrations already – for our ‘Saturday only’ ticket, we’re completely sold out! I mean, it’s looking like it’ll be huge and so much fun! Can’t wait for it!

I also might be talking to – who knows! Me, I guess. But yeah, I’m thinking about it. I’ve got a decent topic that is interesting and I’m going to go for it (When it’s all nailed down, It’ll be released and also update the registration page on it)

Tom Krcha (Adobe) also confirmed to speak last week which is awesome! We’ve also got one more speaker due to confirm too, I’ll let people know on twitter and all that good social stuff.

Hey guys! I thought It’d be the ideal opportunity for me to shoot some pictures around for the new game I’m working on!

I actually haven’t named it yet – although I’ve got some funky ideas, nothings set in stone yet! So for the time being, we’ll call it as Dave for no reason at all.

Okay so a little run down on the game, it’s all set on a theatre stage, with a nice cheery crowd and those cool red curtains (They’re always red!). It’s actually in the setting of a Japanese on-stage gameshow too, so it’s quirky. To add to it’s quirkiness, Waterflame is conjuring some lovely, fitting music for us too! It’s a platformer/puzzler with some stages being full out puzzles to solve, and some more physically just getting to the end without failing.

As you can instantly tell – I’ve also got NCH on-board, as you’ll know  that we’re both working on a few things together too and it’s going really well, he’s a good guy!

I feel that’s all I really need to say at this point – so feast you’re eyes on these beauties!
