December recap!

06 Dec 12

I think I’ll start doing these every few months as these are a good way to sum up everything I’m doing to be honest! I generally only blog when I’ve made good progress with a project and I’ve always got other things on the go so here it is!

Above Average Guy

So this project as you’ll probably know is coming along brilliant! Currently it’s pretty much done, all levels have been designed, there are like 40 levels which are essentially micro-puzzles with a badass boss who is a nightmare unless you work out his pattern. So talking about bosses, I’ve seen a lot of bosses over the year that are random and it seems to be a little about skill but mostly luck. I’ve just done things how they used to be, how I grew up with, which is all pattern. If you figure out the bosses pattern, you’ll be able to kill him pretty fast. I think this is how most bosses should be done, it’s fun figuring out what he does and how he reacts I personally think!

The boss has been pretty glued in to how I wanted it, but his environment wasn’t. This is the final environment for the boss!

Above Average Guy is in it’s final steps as I said then, really hoping to tie this up within a week, as it’s mostly just bug fixes. Everything runs great! A little polish on gameplay and it’ll be all good. I’ll probably end up releasing a trailer for it like I usually do, and MAYBE pretty soon I’ll post up the intro animation to the game which I absolutely love. Alex (NCH) done an amazing job with this and it sets the scene to the game so well!

Space is Key Android + Space is Key iOS/Android 1.1 update

If you follow Space is Key mobile version you’ll know that I’ve been porting it all over AIR so It can be used on both Android/iOS. This is great news, cause’ I’ve really been wanting to get an Android version out this year but never got around to it, so with AIR I’m just killing a load of birds with a massive shotgun. S0 at the moment this is also pretty much done! It’s been fully tested on a few Android devices (Galaxy S2,S3, Nexus 7, HTC EVO 3D) and a few I can’t remember their names. To point out! The builds are universal, so it’ll work on any size screen (Tablets or phones), which I think is pretty cool!

It’s the iOS build that’s taking a little bit longer than I thought, doing a bit of optimisation with it and after a long mess on with iTunes connect and the whole certificate process with Adobe AIR, I think it’s finally cleared up! So this really shouldn’t be long either.

I showed this off before but the new titlescreen rocking Space is key 2 and Hell!

New project!

So currently this project isn’t named. Even though I usually try and tie up a name really quick, nothing is set in stone yet. So this is another game I’m teaming up with Alex on and it’s going to be a side-scrolling, survival/defense kind of game. Have that short genres! In essesence you’re a dude based in a forest and the unknown is attacking you, it’s a wave based game and you’re blowing the crap out of things to stay alive!

It’s still pretty early on, I’ve done a lot of the games logic and engine and Alex is mainly plodding on with making it all look pretty. BUT, here’s an exclusive little peak! :)

A peak at the new game I’m working on! As you can see, it’s a pretty dark game. I wonder what you’re surviving against?! It’s not zombies!

It’s always good to be working on a few things at once I feel, really gives fresh perspectives to how you’re doing things and not just lost in a single game. So that’s it really! I’ll update you guys more when I have more to say :)

Also if you haven’t voted for Platcore and Space is Key for a Mochi award. I’d really love you if you did! Seriously, you’ll have my love, internet style! Thanks guys! :) Click me to vote

Space is Key iOS/Android update!

19 Nov 12

I thought it’d be good to blog a little about what I’m currently doing and what’s happening with Space is Key mobile!

As some of you guys know from Spaceiskey.com. Space is Key is coming to Android! (Let me get a WAHOO!)

What is happening Chris?

So what I’ve been doing is porting it to AS3 and optimising some stuff so I can use AIR. Which, by the way is running so so good. The initial plan was just to do this for Android, but I thought why not update the iOS build too?!

Doing that is all cool BUT I’ve went one level up from that. I’ve toyed with the idea for months after I initially launched Space is Key iOS but I didn’t have my own Mac so I kinda pushed it aside. Now, this isn’t the case with AIR!

Space is Key 2 AND a new section called ‘hell levels’ which is tough levels, is now in Space is Key mobile 1.1. This seriously means lots of levels for you guys, and for everyone who bought the iOS version, it’s going to be a free update! In fact  over all platforms, these levels won’t be charged for. I’m feeling kind :)

OH! And if you own an iPad. All you have to do is buy this App once (I think the same will apply for Android, not sure if it’s the same as iOS though). But it’s universal, it’ll auto-scale to your resolution so no need to buy it on your phone then your tablet!

The menu got a little touch-up too with all the new stuff :)

As for a release date, I’m really not sure as I’ve got a few projects on the go. I was really hoping to launch this month (November), I may still make it though but I’ve also been having some trouble with mobile provisioning stuff on the iPhone. I’ll post up when I’ve fully finished the game and it’s in the hands of Apple/Google but I tweet on twitter too so follow me there @ChrisJeffGames

The new addition to Space is Key mobile versions!

TL;DR

  • Now using Adobe AIR!
  • Space is Key is hitting Android soon!
  • Space is Key iOS will now be a universal app! Both iPad and iPhone support.
  • We may be hitting Blackberry Playbook but I’ve got nothing to test with, so I’m doubting it very soon!
  • 1.1 will be launching the same time on iOS/Android = All Space is Key 2 levels included!
  • Release date is super soon, might be November 2012, if not a little after that. Too hard to say!

That’s it folks! Just wanted to clear it all up too as I’ve had a few questions about it :)

Not just iOS anymore!

22 Sep 12

For those that follow me on twitter and what not. You’d already know this! So AIR at this point is now a feasible method, I mean when I first developed Space is Key for the iPhone it wasn’t really up to scratch so I went the native route. Now though, it’s really packing a punch! So what I thought about (When I think about stuff, it usually ends up getting done anyway) is to port over Space is Key iOS over to AIR. I mean, I’d feel more at home in Flash than in Objective-C anyway so it’s a no brainer.

After a bit of thought on that, I thought screw it. Let’s do the Android AND Blackberry Playbook version! SO! Space is Key will now be hitting you hard in the face (That’s right, in the face!) on more than one mobile platform.

Now all you Android folk can stop sending me emails about releasing it on there!

But that’s it really. I’m starting development pretty soon and I’m also finishing off Above Average Guy and another quick project so It’s busy times! But when there is stuff to show, you’ll see it!

Also head over to the space is key website for more stuffs!

Oh and if you’re blind and didn’t see it above, there is a new trailer! ^

Mochi London and SpaceIsKey.com!

14 Sep 12

Mochi London 2012 is this week! I can’t freaking wait! If any of you guys are headed there, do come and say hi, don’t be shy :)

When I’m back next week I’ll also follow up with a round up of the event, y’know, as I did last year. All in good fun!

So this year is a bit different too. Jay Armstrong will be speaking! To be honest, I don’t do much public speaking, I don’t think Jay does either. But it’s going to be pretty cool! Our presentation is called ‘So who are you trying to impress?’ and we’re really focusing on our experiences with ‘They Took Her’ and what we learned from it all.

So… Who are you trying to impress?

In other, pretty awesome news! Space is Key now has a website. It’s been long due to be honest, as I’ve always had plans to port it over to other platforms. But it looks like this may be happening sooner than I thought! I’ll update you guys as I go along, y’know I always do :) CHEQUE EET OUT! SpaceIsKeyDotCom

FINALLY! Space is Key now has a site, thanks to a good friend Dean Murphy!

Needs moar achievements

28 Jun 11

Hey guys. Some quick updates on the situation with Space is Key iOS! We’re actually fully finished on the game, it’s well working, and gives you just as much pixel smashing fun as on the pc! (If not more fun!)

Pah! I can do better...

Pah! I can do better...

At the moment, we’ve just finished adding a chunky 26 achievements using GameCentre. So you’ll be able to compete with your friends to see who can unlock the most! Heres a snapshot of a few!

You could do these. Right?

You could do these. Right?

I actually ran a little competition over on the facebook page too, basically ‘What’s the most creative achievement you could add to Space is Key iOS’ and we had a load of entries! Some really cool ideas. And I ended up picking 5 of the ones I used and they’ll be getting a promo code for the game on release! So well done guys :)

So yeah, we’re just testing to make sure they all work and nothings wrong. Then we’ll throw the game to apple, and hopefully get a decent approval time.

I’ve also had a few emails with regards to pricing too. I wish I could push it free like the flash game! But there are costs, and I’ll be charging it at tier 1 (.99$/.59p) so it’s only a small amount! Surely if you love it, you won’t mind :) But for those who don’t have the funds, I’ll be throwing promo codes around, so get involved on my facebook page.

Ignore the other two scores. I'm top ;)

I’ll update you as I get further in the process! I’ve got a load of news I want to tell you guys also! Lots of things in the cooking pot. Enjoy!
